The work
A symphony in three movements — Morphosis, Transcension, Entropia — where the orchestra, eight dancers and the projections share the same stage. AIŌN explores time not as a line, but as a space one inhabits.
Conceived by Anna Thorvaldsdóttir and Erna Ómarsdóttir, premiered by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Iceland Dance Company under the direction of Anna-Maria Helsing. The films by Pierre-Alain Giraud and Valdimar Jóhannsson — rocks, waters, figures between the human and abstraction — envelop the hall. The score, co-commissioned by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, has since been recorded (Sono Luminus, 2023), named among the year’s best classical albums by the New York Times.
