The collaboration
Since 2011, Pierre-Alain Giraud has been setting in motion the world of Icelandic artist Gabríela Friðriksdóttir.
Three animation films — Crepusculum (2011), The Inner Life of a Hay Bale (2016) and Victimhood (2023, for Björk) — created for a major exhibition in Frankfurt, a Reykjavik gallery and a world tour. To these are added Dies Irae, co-directed at the heart of the Iceland Dance Company’s Sacrifice programme alongside works by Matthew Barney and Ragnar Kjartansson, and the film Cabin Fever.

The Inner Life of a Hay Bale
Drawing by Gabríela Friðriksdóttir, animated frame by frame
A drawn meditation in which hay becomes a metaphor for the human mind — nostalgia for the fields of the West Fjords of Gabríela’s childhood. The exhibition built around the film opened at Gallery GAMMA in Reykjavik (May 21 – August 27, 2016), part of the official programme of the 2016 Reykjavik Arts Festival.

Sacrifice — a festival of common things made holy: an event programme by the Iceland Dance Company (artistic direction Erna Ómarsdóttir & Valdimar Jóhannsson) in which the audience moves from ritual to ritual, among works by Matthew Barney, Ragnar Kjartansson & Margrét Bjarnadóttir (music Bryce Dessner) and Gabríela Friðriksdóttir. Dies Irae, co-directed by Gabríela Friðriksdóttir and Pierre-Alain Giraud, is a black-and-white rhapsody on the passage from life to death — 15 minutes on a loop, set to the Gregorian chant of the Dies Irae played backwards. Premiered at the Reykjavík City Theatre (March 2017), then Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, London (August 2017), tanzhaus nrw Düsseldorf and Onassis Stegi, Athens (2018).
“A feast of innovation and ideas.”
